David Philip Wilson (1909-1994) was born in PA but spent the majority of his artistic life in Chagrin Falls living in the beautiful home atop Grove Hill with his wife Binnie. He was known as the “go to” portrait painter from the 1940s into the1960s.

Wilson was commissioned to paint portraits of 5 Ohio Governors, Frank Lausche, John Brown, C. William O’Neill, Michael DiSalle and James Rhodes for the Ohio History Center. In addition, he was commissioned to paint the official portraits of Ohio astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. The Glenn portrait hangs in the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. His portrait of President Lyndon B. Johnson hangs in the Texas Statehouse.

Wilson taught anatomy, still life and hand construction at the Cleveland Institute of Art three days a week and painted landscapes and seascapes for recreation. His wife Binnie was an artist in her own right, designing wallpaper and fabric for a Chicago firm.
